DISCO₂ projects launched
Between February and May, 13 research projects under the DISCO₂ funding call from the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space launched, involving a total of 41 partners from academia and industry. The aim of the funding call “Disruptive Approaches to the Industrial Use of CO₂” (DISCO₂ for short) is to develop novel technologies and methods for utilizing CO₂ from industrial point sources and the atmosphere or the environment. DISCO₂ is therefore situated within the field of Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU).
Over the next three years, the participants will research and develop various processes along the CCU value chain. Among other things, the research teams are focusing on the capture and processing of CO₂ from the air, the sea and biogas, and on the conversion of the extracted CO₂ into basic platform chemicals for the chemical industry. The substances produced range from synthesis gas and olefins to methanol and kerosene. The focus is on processes that have the potential to bring about fundamental and sustainable transformations when scaled up commercially in the future.
In order to assess the actual environmental impact of the new technologies and to determine their economic potential, life-cycle assessments and techno-economic analyses will be carried out throughout the project’s duration. The accompanying research carried out by DISCO₂ aims to consolidate these analyses and provide an overview of the projects’ assessments.
